Controversial DA advert: political scheme or misstep?─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 15:07 Wed, 08 May 2024
“The advert taps into a broader sentiment of discontent and disillusionment with the political landscape.”
The recent release of a controversial advert by the DA, depicting the burning of a South African national flag, has ignited a firestorm of debate and condemnation.
While critics decry the advert as provoking and divisive, the University of the Free State’s political analyst Professor Sethulego Matebesi gives a different perspective, suggesting that the fallout may not necessarily spell doom for the party in the upcoming elections on May 29.

The advert, launched by the DA on Sunday, features a burning South African flag accompanied by a stark warning of impending danger, should a coalition between the ANC, EFF, and Zuma materialise. DA leader John Steenhuisen defended the advert, asserting that its purpose was to provoke discomfort and stimulate public discourse.
In analysing the advert’s impact, Professor Matebesi pointed out that while it may be contentious, it serves the strategic purpose of disrupting the status quo and challenging prevailing narratives. He suggested it taps into a broader sentiment of discontent and disillusionment with the current political landscape, resonating with segments of the electorate who feel marginalised or overlooked by the ruling party.

However, Matebesi also raised critical questions about the methods employed by the DA in conveying its message. He further drew parallels to recent incidents of public protest where old females were completely undressed to convey their grievances, underscoring the broader implications of such actions on societal norms and values.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the DA for what he perceived as an attempt to undermine the national flag for political gain. In a statement, Ramaphosa called it desperate and incompatible with the principles of democracy and unity, particularly in the context of South Africa’s celebration of 30 years of freedom.
