“His disability did not define his passion for music.”

A Bloemfontein DJ and entertainer with cerebral palsy because of an injury at birth has not allowed physical challenges to hinder his love for music.

Khwezi Duma (45) has been playing and making music in the Free State capital for many years using his big toe to produce and play sets at functions including, weddings, funerals, and parties. His stage name is DJ Kloop 98.

Duma said when he DJs he first determines the type of audience at the event and then creates a playlist for them. He says he also has a backup playlist.

“Growing up, I was conscious of the fact that I was different from other children so I sat in the house and listened to music. I love music because it changed my life and gave me self-confidence,” said Duma.

“When I grew up I was inspired by many of the DJs in the industry. I saw software called Virtual DJ and started playing around with it. Then I became perfect using it and people started enjoying the music I played and that’s where it started.”

“When it comes to producing it’s all about me, what I like, and what I feel like at the moment. Usually, I use a laptop with a keyboard and use the Fruity Loops music studio software and Virtual DJ.”

Duma said last year he played at the Bloem Show as he was one of the DJs there. When he went on stage, he noticed a small crowd, and when he finished playing his set, it was full.

“I normally don’t look at the crowd when playing because I am a shy person, believe it or not, so after my set was done after thirty minutes I looked up and it was so full and people were enjoying themselves.”

Duma said he needs a new wheelchair as his current one is torn and the tires are smooth, leading to him sliding frequently. He also needs new equipment that will enhance his music career.

Meanwhile, Jean Webber Home has been in the news because a contract with the Department of Social Development has not been renewed. It has been two months since the caregivers have been paid.

An inquiry was made to the Department of Social Development, but no reply has been received.
