Grey College mourns death of a Grade 10 learner─── ZENANDE MPAME 15:00 Thu, 25 Apr 2024
“Lunathi was a very keen and good soccer player.”
The Bloemfontein school received news of the passing of one of their boys on Wednesday (24/4) after being admitted to hospital with a brain infection.
Principal Braam van Wyk said the way they miss every Grey boy when they aren’t at school is the same way they will miss Lunathi Mayisela (15). His place will be empty among his fellow scholars.
“If there’s one thing that makes the school unique, it is how fellow Grey friends stand together. That place will be empty now, Lunathi will be missed because of how he lived flat-out,” said Van Wyk.

“One lesson we try to teach at Grey is that you can’t change what happened yesterday and you don’t have control over tomorrow, you live today. And Lunathi lived every day to the fullest.”
Mayisela started feeling ill a week ago. He was allegedly admitted to ICU and was in a coma. The MRI scans showed a brain infection.
On Wednesday his father shared a Facebook post that he lost his firstborn son, who was only 15 years old.
“I will remember the smiling face. You normally get confirmation about someone’s character when you see their friends react when they hear about you,” said Van Wyk. “How his friends reacted when I had to tell them about his passing, said everything about his lifestyle and character and how popular he was among his friends.”
“Lunathi was a typical Grey boy. When we had fun we had fun, and when we played we played seriously and when we worked we worked seriously. He last represented the school on a soccer tour in Durban and that was when he fell ill.”
Van Wyk said he wasn’t sure about the funeral arrangements and was waiting for information from his parents.
