Political parties unhappy about National Health Insurance Bill─── ZENANDE MPAME 12:54 Mon, 14 Aug 2023
The National Health Insurance Bill was passed by the Parliament on 12 June 2023.
Political parties in the Free State have raised concerns about the bill, especially given the dire state of public health care in the country and much worse the province. This bill calls for the creation of the National Health Insurance Fund, which will work to increase everyone's access to high-quality medical care.
“The NHI is nothing but a political gimmick that the ruling party is using to canvass for votes for the upcoming national elections, The FF Plus will oppose this legislation in every way possible,” said Free State FF Plus Health spokesperson, Philip van Staden.

It is stated in the Bill that the NHI Fund will be funded from general taxes, contributions of persons earning above a set amount, and monthly contributions made by the employees to the fund.
“The DA does not support the NHI Bill in its current form. This poorly formulated Bill should be objected to in totality. This Bill will further worsen the health challenges that the country faces,” said Free State DA Health spokesperson, Mariëtte Pittaway.
The legislation will be implemented in phases from 2026.
