Life imprisonment for husband who murdered pregnant wife─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 14:27 Tue, 18 Jul 2023
A 41-year-old man from North West has been sentenced to life after pleading guilty to murdering his pregnant wife.
The conviction of Thapelo Edwin Mojaki emanates from an incident that took place on 9 October 2022 at the Kolong Village near Taung, where he approached his wife, Matshidiso Catherine Mojaki (36). She was on her way to catch a taxi to work, together with their children (16 and 18 years old). It's understood that the perpetrator asked for money and when the wife said she didn’t have any, he took out sheep sheering scissors and stabbed her several times. The victim was declared dead on the scene, Mojaki was arrested the following day and was denied bail.
North West National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Henry Manothame, says in aggravation of the sentence, the state prosecutor, Tecia Khula, urged the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence, as there were no compelling circumstances to deviate. He adds that she further highlighted the trauma experienced by their children who experienced their pregnant mother being stabbed to death by their father.
“In imposing sentence, Magistrate Buti Zulu agreed with the state and remarked that the accused had a responsibility to protect his family and not be a perpetrator of crime towards them,” explained Mamothame.
