Police continue their murder investigations following the arrest of a 19-year-old suspect who stabbed a learner to death at a bus rank in Rustenburg in the North West.

The provincial police spokesperson, Sam Tselanyane, alleged two groups gathered at the bus rank, leading to a fight and eventual stabbing of the victim. It’s alleged that on Friday 2 June 2023, at about 15:45, police received a complaint about the stabbing incident. Upon arrival at the scene, the police found members of the community gathered around a motionless body covered with a blanket.

Tselanyane explained the preliminary investigations revealed the victim was stabbed with a sharp object in his throat. According to eyewitnesses, the victim was a learner from a high school in Rustenburg. He allegedly fought with another pupil from the other school, who in turn recruited a group of other learners to attack the victim's group.

Tselanyane added the victim was certified dead on the scene, while another learner who was also stabbed, was transported to a local hospital by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS). A 19-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after being traced by the police. He is expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder and attempted murder.
