The Free State police started a search for cable theft suspects after a 39-year-old police officer was shot while on duty.
The police officer was shot and injured on Thursday 18 May 2023 while following information of cable theft in progress at the block of flats situated in Maphisa Road, Phahameng, in the area known as Silver City.
According to the provincial police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, Members of Bloemfontein Flying Squad and Mangaung Community Service Centre received information that there were a number of people busy pulling out cables at the unoccupied buildings.
When the police vehicles arrived, a group of about seven males opened fire at the police and a bullet hit a 39-year-old sergeant in the right upper arm. The suspects ran in different directions. Covane stated the injured police officer was rushed to the local hospital where he received treatment.
A case of attempted murder was opened at the Mangaung Police Station.
