Is the new in spotlight PRIME drink healthy for all? | News Article

The new in-spotlight PRIME Drink, which has recently landed in South Africa, might be a health hazard for children under the age of 18 and pregnant women.

Social media is buzzing with parents and teenagers who rush to the stores where the drink is available. PRIME comes in three different products, PRIME Hydration, PRIME Hydration+ Sticks and PRIME Energy. The latter contains caffeine and other ingredients, thus the company has stated it is not recommended for children under the age of 18, women who are pregnant or nursing or individuals who are sensitive to caffeine.

What is PRIME you might ask?

According to PRIME’s official page, the drink is a sports drink developed by YouTubers and influencers Logan Paul, and KSI. Given the celebrity status of the two influencers and their primary audiences, which are teenagers and young adults aged between 13 and 24, the drink has become popular around those age groups.

PRIME Energy contains zero sugar, however, it also contains 200mg of caffeine per drink, and electrolytes. Given the amount of caffeine per drink, those under 18 years and pregnant women are not the target market for Prime Energy. Some of the benefits for those who are into sports, include improved performance and reduced pain.

The two PRIME products recommended for those under 18 years and pregnant women are PRIME Hydration and PRIME Hydration+ Sticks. PRIME Hydration is explained to be a naturally flavoured drink with 10% coconut water, Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs), antioxidants + electrolytes, which carry the benefit to help one refresh, replenish, and refuel. According to the official website, PRIME Hydration+ Sticks are a water-soluble, powdered version of the PRIME Hydration drink that is an easy, on-the-go option for any lifestyle.
