Thabo Bester's escape: Grandmother of cell fire victim admitted to hospital | News Article

The grandmother of Thabo Bester’s cell fire victim has been admitted to a hospital in Bloemfontein after viewing the remains of her son Wednesday morning.

The charred body of Katleho Junior Bereng-Mpholo (32) was used as a decoy for the Facebook rapist and murderer Thabo Bester to escape on 3 May 2022.

ActionSA provincial chairperson, Patricia Kopane, who was at the government mortuary in support of the family, revealed to OFM News that his grandmother, Monica Matsie, was admitted to a hospital in Bloemfontein.

"It’s a sad moment for the family. It's shocking, even the [grand]mother was taken to the hospital. But I think at the same time it's a relief that at least they can see the remains and the proper burial will be done. It's one of those incidents where they can have closure. They will be able to bury him with dignity and respect,” she said.

Yesterday, the father of the deceased, Batho Mpholo, opened a case against the Department of Health, the Department of Correctional Services, and G4S. This after stating that he demands answers as to how his son’s body ended up in Bester’s cell because he is not convinced that his son collapsed and was taken to the hospital where he died.

So far several accused – Dr Nandi Magudumana, and her father Zolile Sekeleni; former G4S security guard Senohe Matsoara; technician Teboho James Lipholo; and another G4S guard Motanyane John Masukela – all appeared in court after being arrested.

They were remanded in custody until 3 and 4 May 2023 for a formal bail hearing. Sekeleni is the only suspect out on bail of R10 000.
