North West Education MEC visits school closed down by gangsters─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:59 Mon, 24 Apr 2023
The North West Department of Education has taken steps to tackle the surge of gangsterism at schools, following allegations of increased gang violence at one of the schools in Vryburg.
According to the provincial spokesperson, Elias Malindi, they received information on Friday 21 April 2023 that the John Frylinck school has not been operating for two days. As a result, learners were carrying dangerous weapons to school intending to cause gang-related crime.
The MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, visited the school on Monday morning. During her visit, she condemned the barbaric acts of learners and strongly relayed that educators and departments cannot be bullied by learners in schools.
Motsumi further reiterated that no learner or teacher should be frightened to go to school because of certain learners who want to carry out their grievances towards others. Malindi quoted Motsumi's message to the learners at the John Frylinck Secondary School: “From today, I have adopted this school. It needs proper support to be at a level that is admirable. I have roped in our external stakeholders, like the South African Police Services, ward councillors, and SGBs to adopt and frequent this school. Random search and seizure will be at the order of the day and gang leaders using our children should be brought to book.”
