Foreign national arrested with 14 hand grenades─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:21 Sun, 23 Apr 2023
The police in the North West have apprehended a suspect (38) for the possession of 14 hand grenades in Khuma, near Stilfontein outside Klerksdorp.
The illegal immigrant was arrested on Saturday 22 April 2023 for contravening the Explosives and the Immigration Acts.
The Klerksdorp-based Matlosana area is troubled with illegal mining activities and the police had arrested foreign Lesotho nationals in the past. Stilfontein and Orkney are some of the areas in the City of Matlosana struggling with the said crime.
According to police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, the suspect will appear before the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday 24 April 2023.
She said the investigations into the matter are being conducted by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks.
"On Saturday 22 April 2023 at about 06:00, a police officer, working at Public Order Policing (POP) in Klerksdorp, received information of a male in possession of explosives in Extension 6 in the Khuma Location near Stilfontein. Upon following up, the officer found the suspect at the corner of Marumole and Lekoma Street and searched him," Myburgh added.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Police Commissioner, Sello Kwena, has since congratulated the police for the arrest of the suspect. Kwena also thanked the community for being the ears and eyes of the police and said that their positive response averted a tragedy.
