Concerns over slow progress made in flood-stricken Deelpan | News Article
Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Aaron Motswana

The Chairperson of a Portfolio Committee Aaron Motswana has raised concerns about the slow-paced progress made to assist the community of Deelpan, which experienced floods in 2022.

Motswana said the Tswaing and Mahikeng Local Municipalities, including various departments in the province, have failed to honour the call for humanitarian support to the community of Deelpan. This after stating that there is a general dissatisfaction with the response and emergency assistance by the provincial government to the community whose houses were repeatedly flooded since early last year. This was during his presentation of an oversight report by the Portfolio Committee on the Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, at the Provincial Legislature in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District on Tuesday,

“At Deelpan, in the municipality of Tswaing, communities were promised that they will be relocated. Officials went there. Our focus is on Human Settlements and the district municipality in particular, including the local communities. Human Settlements has reported on their progress in terms of their intention to relocate the people of Deelpan. Our major concern is the slow pace at which this particular process is moving because it was supposed to be an emergency because it was a disaster," he said.

Tswaing said the committee had raised various issues on the time taken to implement the Atamelang Water Supply upgrade, and poor coordination between the Ramotshere Local Municipality and the Department of Human Settlements over the construction of military veteran's houses in Zeerust.
