Criminal activities a 'headache' for North West-based animal shelter─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:56 Sat, 11 Mar 2023
Criminal activities are proving to be a headache for the facilities of Orkney and Klerksdorp Animal Shelter (O&KAS) in the North West.
The shelter has been running for over a decade.
It has been functioning under challenging circumstances since taking over from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
In an interview with the OFM News team, the Chairman of the O&KAS, Uwe Tietz, explained how criminal activities taking place at their facilities have added to their financial woes.
A major headache has been continuous acts of vandalism and dogs that are being stolen, as the shelter does not have money to hire security personnel and install cameras on their premises.

"Our electrical cables must have been stolen at least 5/6 times since September On top of that, we had theft of dogs here on a continuous basis. At least eight thefts in a period of three months. These are our problems.
"We are busy with a sponsored security system, but it is not completed yet. Also with our power failures, I mean, most security systems do not help you," he said.
Tietz appealed to business owners and other people around the area to join hands and assist the shelter.
He said they discovered that the premises they were operating on were not owned by the municipality, even though a municipal employee stayed at the facility.
He added that they have now been left with the burden of fixing premises that are not in a good condition.
