Minister of Education, Angie Motshekga, described the late Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, as one of the best in the country.
Motshekga led delegates of MECs and government officials to the home of the late Makgoe on Monday 6 March 2023, as mourners continued to offer their condolences to Makgoe’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Makgoe lost his life on the N1 outside Winburg, as did his bodyguard, when the car they travelled in early Sunday morning collided with three cows. The driver of the vehicle was taken to a Bloemfontein hospital. Motshekga comprehended the extent of the loss, not only to the Free State but to the entire country, particularly the education fraternity.

“Tate was not only a resource for the province, but he was also a resource nationally. I have been playing Tina Turner's 'Simply the Best' to my husband, Ntate Mathole. After you phoned me, I just played Tina Turner and said, Mathole, he was simply the best. Very sad indeed, may he rest in peace. The Council of Education Ministers (CEM) will never be the same again,” she said.

The premier of the Free State, Mxolisi Dukwana, said Makgoe placed the province on the map in the education sector. Dukwana also sent a message of appreciation to teachers and education staff and said they don’t get the recognition they deserve.
The Provincial Education spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, said the province has lost an icon, a gallant fighter, and someone who had the interests of learners at heart.
