Free State welcomes 24 Christmas babies in first 8 hours─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:16 Wed, 25 Dec 2024
The Free State health sector celebrated a joyful Christmas morning as maternity wards across the province delivered 24 newborn babies between midnight and 08:00.
Nine girls and 15 boys were welcomed into the world in the first eight hours of Christmas Day.
The first baby was delivered at National District Hospital in Bloemfontein at 00:15. Palesa Khatsi, from Bloemfontein, welcomed her son Thandolwethu Kosana, who weighed a healthy 2.64kg. Both mother and baby are reported to be doing well.

The second Christmas baby followed at 00:30 at Dihlabeng Regional Hospital in Bethlehem. Thembisile Ndaba from Senekal gave birth to her daughter, weighing 1.89kg.
The third baby arrived at Bongani Regional Hospital in Welkom. At 12:33, Mpho Seretsi from Welkom gabe birth to her daughter, who weighed 2.67kg.

Acting Free State Health spokesperson Elke de Witt said the number of births is expected to increase throughout the day.
“Babies born on Christmas Day hold a very special place in our celebrations,” said De Witt. “The Premier, MEC for Health, and other members of the Executive Council are visiting maternity wards today to personally congratulate the proud mothers, hand over baby care packages, and meet the dedicated healthcare staff.”
The department extended its gratitude to the hardworking health workers who helped deliver the Christmas babies safely.
