Employees of Mangaung Metro Municipality's Water and Sanitation Directorate were given tips on what to do when encountering a snake in manholes or valves by renowned snake catcher Harry Jan 'Slangman' Baloyi on Thursday 23 February 2023.

The purpose was to give employees information on how to recognise various snake species and what to do if they come across certain snakes.

Snakes can be discovered in manholes or valves as winter approaches and they prepare for hibernation.

'Important not to panic'

"It is important that you don't panic when you encounter a snake, you need to do your part in ensuring your safety by wearing protective clothing when you are on-site," said Baloyi.

The African Snake Bite Institute reports an increase in snake bites, especially during the summer months between January and April. Venomous snakes in the Free State include, among others, the puff adder, cape cobra, and rinkhals.

Snake catcher and expert, Theunis Victor, advised: "When you come across a snake, stand still or move slowly backward. Keep your eyes on the snake and look for characteristic features to identify it later."

Victor warns people not to try to treat snake bites themselves with home remedies. Only medical professionals with the appropriate training can treat snake bites, and the course of treatment for each bite can vary greatly. Calling a professional snake catcher to capture and relocate the creature is advised for locals who come across snakes.

Useful tips on what to do when encountering a snake:

  • Do not attempt to handle or remove the snake on your own by attacking or confronting it. Instead, take note of where they are headed if they are not stationary, so you can call for professional help to remove it.
  • Protect your family, pets, and the young by evacuating them from the scene and ensuring they are well kept away. Keep any possible entries closed until it is safe.
  • Evacuate immediately and get professional help if they are trapped or hiding in hard-to-reach or tight spaces where there is no room for the snake to escape to or slip away behind or inside, such as a cupboard or shelves, or any furniture, such as a sofa.
  • Try not to engage in sudden movements that might startle or trigger the snake's alert and give them space. Most of the time, they did not mean to attack you. They might flee or move away if they come into contact with human beings. Move slowly away in the opposite direction.
  • Seek medical attention in the event of a snake bite. Do not attempt to self-treat or address the wound, instead keep the person calm and still while waiting for medical help.

It is helpful to take note of and remember the appearance of the snake to help identify any possible poisoning risk.
