Northern Cape man receives life sentence for rape─── BAMBATHA GIKO 10:51 Sat, 28 Jan 2023
A 24-year-old suspect from Victoria West in the Northern Cape has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of raping his five-year-old niece on 27 October 2017.
Police spokesperson Sergio Kock says the victim received a lift to town from her uncle. While on their way, the uncle suddenly stopped and decided to assault her sexually.
The victim told her mother about the assault after the suspect had dropped her off at home. The mother called the police and the suspect was arrested on the same day.
Kock adds that the suspect did try to apply for bail, but it was opposed by police and he was subsequently sentenced on 17 January 2023 in the Victoria West Regional Court.
