The Kimberley-based Sol Plaatje Local Municipality has revealed that efforts to restore water supply to residents have gained momentum.

This was after the last two motors at the water pump station were taken for drying and repairs to aid in efforts to return the water supply to residents.

According to the municipal spokesperson, Thoko Riet, one of the two motors from their affected pump station has been repaired and returned to the station.

Riet earlier said the municipality had experienced a malfunction at one of its valves, which then led to the flooding of the pumps and motors on the abstraction side.

She said the efforts to try and fix the issues were earlier stifled by the rising water levels in the Vaal River at Riverton, making access to the pump station difficult.

Riet added that the municipality has since appointed a service provider to help distribute water to residents across different points.

"Due to float assembling difficulties on the strong water current, all four motors shall be offloaded on Monday and be installed.

"As such, pumping can only start after all four motors have been assembled and installed.

"The success of this exercise and completion time will determine when water will be available.

"Water supply will still continue throughout the wards. We are doing what we can with the limited water trucks available," Riet added.

She explained that the municipality is doing all it can to supply water with its resources.

"The water supply distribution is as follows, but the flatbeds will still continue roaming amongst the different wards:

  • Water supply points are available at Hancor Dairy;
  • Water supply is being arranged for the Pick n Pay circle in Galeshewe;
  • Roodepan police station;
  • Motswako four-way;
  • Diamond Park and Greenpoint four-way at the vlak;
  • The old police station in Galeshewe;
  • Odion in Homevale Extension;
  • 8 Phutanang soccer field;
  • 2000 hall;
  • Soul City vlak;
  • St Paul’s Road in Colville; and
  • Lerato Park between the CRU flats.

For those that can, Newton Reservoir also has a point where water is supplied.
