A government official at one of the local municipalities in the Northern Cape is in trouble with the law after she was apprehended by the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Unit.

The 44-year-old, identified as Nomava Luwalala, faces 20 charges of fraud.

She is employed as a cashier at the De Aar-based Emthanjeni Local Municipality, and was arrested by the Hawks on Friday morning, 2 December 2022.

According to the Hawks' provincial spokesperson, Tebogo Thebe, it is alleged that Luwalala manipulated a municipal system called eNatis from July 2019 to December 2020 while performing her duties. She is said to have failed to report all the monies received, and as a result, the aforementioned municipality suffered a loss of R120 252.

She has already appeared in the local magistrate's court and was released on R1 000 bail. She will appear in court again on 20 March 2023.

“The 44-year-old Nomava Luwalala, who is the cashier at Emthanjeni [Local] Municipality, appeared briefly before Hanover Magistrate's Court today, 01 December 2022, facing charges of 20 counts of fraud.

"Luwalala was arrested when she reported for duty at Hanover local municipal offices.

"The accused was immediately taken to court after her arrest for her first court appearance at Hanover Magistrate's Court and a bail of R1000 was granted.

"The matter was postponed to 20 March 2023 for regional court transfer,” Thebe adds.
