The police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, explained that three suspects entered the fueling station on Stateway Street at about 07:00, while two other suspects remained in the white Volkswagen Polo with a Free State registration number. Thakeng said an undisclosed amount of cash was robbed from the tills and the safe.

According to Thakeng, a police officer arrived in a police vehicle at the fueling station to fill up whilst the robbery was in progress. He says the police officer was shot in his right shoulder and robbed of his firearm. Five suspects drove off from the scene. Thakeng added that the police officer was taken to the hospital in Matjhabeng.

Thakeng has requested anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of suspects to contact Detective Sergeant Andrew Lechesa of Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes at 082-493-1204 or visit the nearest police station.

Meanwhile, the District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Maj.-Gen. Lerato Mohale has called on business owners to beef up security at their premises, especially during opening and closing times. Molale said the police won't rest until the suspects have been arrested.
