Free State Premier to shower Kopanong residents with food hampers - WATCH─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:45 Thu, 17 Nov 2022
The Free State Premier has vowed to donate food to residents of the Kopanong Local Municipality as part of an early Christmas gesture.
Premier Sisi Ntombela said this during her visit to Jagersfontein on Wednesday, where victims of the disaster which occurred two months ago, were handed food hampers by Gift of the Givers in partnership with the provincial government. Hundreds of hampers were handed out to 200 families who were directly affected and 300 families who were slightly affected by the disaster. Whilst in the mood of festive season, Ntombela said desipite the disaster that occurred in Jagersfontein two months ago, they felt that it was right to come back to the town, hand out food hampers to the victims and wish them a jovial Christmas. She further said that she will be visiting other towns around the Kopanong Local Municipality so that more people can be given food hampers.

"It is not only Jagersfontein this time but it is going to be the whole of Kopanong municipality. Tomorrow we'll be in Fauresmith and other places, but the whole of Jagersfontein is going to benefit this time," she said.
Ntombela further said the provincial government has intervened to assist Kopanong municipality with salaries, as the cash-strapped municipality did not have funds to pay its workers. The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has since appointed the former spokesperson for the department, Zolile Lobe, to help the municipality steer the ship in the right direction following previous issues. Whilst the mayor of the municipality, Xolani Tseletsele, said the municipality is dealing with internal issues and some of them have to do with the finances of the municipality.
