Free State court postpones bail application after double murders in Ireland | News Article

The bail application in the double murder case against the Irish national, Ruth Lawrence, has been postponed to 16 November 2022 by the Local Magistrate's Court in Bloemfontein.

The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, said the case has been postponed to allow arrangements between the South African and Irish authorities to work on logistical arrangements for sending her back to Ireland.

Shuping said there was already a warrant of arrest issued by the Irish Director of Public Prosecutions for Lawrence. This is for her to face prosecution in Ireland where the two murders she is being accused of, took place. Shuping said the NPA would work closely with the Irish authorities to ensure that the extradition is successful.

“It is alleged that Lawrence fled Ireland when she realised that she was wanted for murder. Investigations revealed that she fled to London, England, before travelling to South Africa. She allegedly left the United Kingdom on 29 May 2014 from London Heathrow Airport to Istanbul, Turkey, before she came to South Africa via Johannesburg,” said Shuping.

OFM News previously reported that a 42-year-old suspect, accused of murders in Ireland, was arrested in Pellissier, Bloemfontein, and appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.

The Hawks spokesperson, Christopher Singo, previously said it was unclear whether the suspect would be prosecuted in South Africa where she was arrested, or in Ireland where the incident happened. Furthermore, he said the case had been handed over to Interpol.

Meanwhile, Shuping says the suspect has agreed to cooperate with the extradition order to take her back to Ireland.
