Eskom has indicated that it is not clear when it would be able to restore the electricity supply to the Free State town of Jagersfontein after their substation was engulfed by mud earlier Sunday, 11 September 2022.

According to spokesperson, Stefanie Jansen van Rensburg, Eskom lost supply to Centlec, the electricity distributor responsible for Jagersfontein town and township.

She further explains that in addition, four Eskom customers on the Fauresmith-Spitskop feeder, three customers on the Pompie-Rietkuil feeder, and the Jagersfontein Mine are without supply.

“We aim to restore electricity supply to the mine before the end of the day,” Van Rensburg indicated.

Reports have it that the wall of a mining dam collapsed at around 06:00 this morning, leading to the area being flooded by mud from the dam.

Van Rensburg explains Eskom’s Rietkuil Substation was also engulfed by the mud resulting in a total loss of bulk supply to Centlec.

“Due to the current situation in the Jagersfontein area and inaccessibility of our substation, it is impossible to estimate when supply will be restored or to determine the extent of the damage.

“Since Eskom’s telecommunication system is also affected by the flood, the impact on surrounding networks is still unclear.  Any meaningful updates will be promptly communicated.

“We wish to express our sincere condolences to those affected by this catastrophic event and commend emergency services for their swift response,” Van Rensburg concluded.
