Senior government managers without qualifications in spotlight─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 13:12 Tue, 30 Aug 2022
As of 1 May 2022, there was a total of 94 senior managers in the Free State Government’s departments without the required qualifications for those positions.
The Acting Minister of Public Service and Administration Thembelani Thulas Nxesi made the information known when he was asked by a member of the National Assembly, Mimmy Martha Gondwe, about the breakdown of senior managers in the public service without qualifications.
According to the reply, the department qualifications in the Free State with the most senior managers without the required qualifications is the Department of Agriculture, with 16 senior managers, followed by the Department of Education with 14, the Department of Health with 13, and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) with 9. The reply further includes that the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Destea) has 8, whereas the Office of the Premier has 7, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has 6, the Department of Social Development also has 6, the Department of Police, Roads, and Transport has 5, the Department of Finance/Treasury also has 5, the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation has 3, and the department with the least senior managers without required qualifications is the Department of Human Settlements, with 2.
In the Northern Cape, there are 75 senior managers without the required qualifications. The Department of Economic Development and Tourism has 10, the Department of Education also has 10, together with the Department of Health with 10. The Department of Roads and Public Works has 8, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development has 7, and the Northern Cape Premier’s office has 7. The Departments of Sports, Arts, and Culture together with Transport, Safety, and Liaison each have 6. The Department of Social Development has 5. The Departments of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, and the Provincial Treasury each have 3. Only the Department of Environment and Nature Conservation has no senior managers without the required qualifications.
Whereas in the North West, 109 senior managers are without the required qualifications. The Office of the Premier has the most with 14, followed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development with 12, the Department of Education with 10, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs with 9, the Department of Transport and Public Works with 7, the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism with 5, the Local Government together with the Department of Social Development and the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation each with 3. The Department of Community Safety and Transport Management has 4 and the Provincial Treasury only has 1.
