Illegal mining activities in North West lead to blockage of sewerage─── 11:42 Sat, 13 Aug 2022
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality in the North West is concerned over the abuse of the sewerage system by illegal miners.
This is as the municipality is experiencing sewer blockages in Khuma township near Stilfontein.
According to the municipality, the blockage is a result of illegal miners processing their activities in the municipal pipeline.
Spokesperson Ntswaki Makhetha says the pipeline is currently blocked and a contractor is busy pumping out the sand.

He says residents in Khuma are expected to experience sewer spillages as a result of the blockage.
Speaking to OFM News, a Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Electrical and Engineering, Fikile Mahlophe, says these activities by illegal miners are costing the municipality a lot of money, citing that almost R6 million has been spent on this matter.
He said they are in talks with law enforcement agencies to clamp down on illegal miners.
