Senior Free State official hands himself over to Hawks─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 12:09 Tue, 02 Aug 2022
A senior official from the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality in the Free State handed himself over to the SAPS’ Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, better known as the Hawks, on Tuesday morning.
According to the Free State Hawks spokesperson, Christopher Singo, the 49-year-old suspect is the third suspect in this case facing charges of fraud, corruption, uttering, forgery, and the contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act. Singo alleges that in 2020, the suspect had authorised a service provider for security services without a tender being advertised. He further says that it was reported that some of the senior officials in the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality wrote several letters to the suspect, advising him to advertise the tender for security. He failed to do so.
Singo adds an estimated amount of R58 million was paid irregularly over a period of two years to the security company. He says the matter was reported to the Hawks team based in Bethlehem for further investigations, and this resulted in the 49-year-old handing himself over to the Hawks’ investigation officer.

The case was postponed to Tuesday 30 September 2022.
