Free State raceway to be renovated for economic growth─── 13:12 Wed, 27 Jul 2022
The Phakisa Raceway near Welkom in the Free State is set to be renovated for economic growth.
This is according to the Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs’ (Destea) Head of Department (HOD), Mbulelo Nokwequ. He told OFM News that Phakisa Raceway will hopefully improve the economy of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, as some world-renowned motorsports associations have recently shown interest in using the raceway.
Nokwequ said Destea MEC, Makalo Mohale, and the Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha, are reportedly identifying suitable ways to execute this project.
“As we all know, the mining activities are in terminal decline in the area. There are many initiatives that we are looking at. One of those is to look at how the Phakisa Raceway can be revived. Currently we are looking at attracting investors who are interested in motorsports with a view of stimulating job creation in the area.“

Nokwequ further said they hope to achieve this goal by the end of 2022, as Phakisa Raceway is still in good shape but needs to be upgraded to international standards.
