A temporary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Free State’s foremost trauma hospital, the Pelonomi Hospital, has been appointed by the provincial Department of Health.

The information that the hospital now has an acting CEO by the name of Tsietsi Makume became known to OFM News while in pursuit of a different story. Makume’s predecessor is Baesi Ramodula, who the HOD of the department, Godfrey Mahlatsi, announced have been moved out of the hospital.

However, the departmental spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, in response to OFM News’ enquiry stated Ramodula was on sick leave at the time of the removal.

Ramodula’s movement out of the hospital came after the workers at the hospital downed tools complaining about their working conditions in December 2021. However, Mahlatsi added during his announcement of ‘moving her aside’ that their decision is not influenced by the strike, the decision was in fact taken prior to the strike. At the time, Mahlatsi further added that Ramodula is aware of the department’s decision.

At the beginning of February 2022, the ‘moved aside’ Ramodula returned back to her office, as if the announcement was not made. Her return to the CEO’s office at the hospital came despite Mahlatsi’s announcement.  It is at the moment unclear on the details of Makume’s appointment.

When Ramodula was officially moved to the provincial health headquarters, Bophelo House, Mvambi explained she was on sick leave all along. Her return to Pelonomi’s office from her sick leave actually came before Mahlatsi implemented a decision to move her. It is, however, not clear why she was moved from the hospital, but Mvambi says it had nothing to do with the strike.
