Residents of the Nketoana Local Municipality in the Free State are calling for the removal of the current mayor and speaker.

The convenor of the protest march, Moko Motholo, says residents have requested to meet with the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Mxolisi Dukwana, and someone from the presidential office with the hope that they will be able to remove the current mayor, Mamiki Mokoena. They claim the mayor has been involved in corrupt dealings that have taken place in the municipality.

Motholo says residents will be marching to the headquarters on Tuesday to deliver a petition or motion of no confidence against the mayor and the speaker, Buyisiwe Makoba. He alleges that the mayor and some senior staff obtained their positions unlawfully.

He further alleges that the mayor and the speaker are unable to engage with residents in all four main towns of the Nketoana Local Municipality, namely Arlington, Lindley, Petrus Steyn, and Reitz.

According to residents, the Motholo Municipality have not delivered on any of their promises since last year’s elections. Motholo also raised issues of waste refuse, that has not been collected for some time, a lack of job opportunities, nepotism, and water shortages.
