Free State municipality fails to pay workers yet again─── LUCKY NKUYANE 16:08 Tue, 31 May 2022
The troubled Theunissen based Masilonyana Local Municipality in the Free State has reportedly failed to pay workers as per their contractual obligation on 28 May.
According to municipal spokesperson, Zongezile Ntjwabule, the municipality did communicate the matter with all the employees.
He says the municipality and the Municipal Manager (MM) have embarked on a plan to raise money by engaging different Free State Departments, with the aim of paying workers.
Ntjwabule says what exacerbates the situation is that consumers fail to pay for the services rendered by the municipality, and as result revenue collection is negatively affected.
OFM News previously reported that the municipality has on numerous occasion failed to pay its workers, citing cash flow problems.

He says previously they were informed by the provincial Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Department and Treasury that bailing municipalities with the financial woes out was not the answer to the root of their problems.
In 2021 OFM News reported the Head of the Department (HOD), Mokete Duma, explained they had rejected some of the excuses from municipalities such as the troubled Trompsburg based Kopanong Local Municipality and Masilonyana itself.

This, as both municipalities failed on numerous occasions to pay their employees’ salaries.
