Former Chief Justice (CJ) Dikgang Moseneke and Albie Sachs are amongst the top former South African judges set to have honorary doctorates bestowed upon them by the University of the Free State (UFS).

The university's spokesperson, Lacea Loader, says in a statement, Moseneke, Sachs and others serving in different portfolios, will be awarded an honorary doctorate during the April 2022 graduation ceremony.

Loader says the university is returning to in-person ceremonies in April on both the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa campuses. Graduations will take place in person in Callie Human from 19 to 22 April and on the Qwaqwa Campus from 29 to 30 April.

"The university is extremely proud to confer honorary doctorates on a group of distinguished individuals. Each of them has made a profound contribution to their respective fields, and we are privileged to welcome them on campus to honour them during the graduation ceremony, says Prof. Francis Petersen, Rector and Vice-Chancellor," Loader adds.

According to Loader, the other honorary doctorate recipients are Prof. Mike Wingfield (serving as an adviser to the Executive of the University of Pretoria and conducting research in both South Africa and globally), Justice Albie Sachs (former justice in the Constitutional Court of South Africa), Judge Dennis Davis (former Judge President at the Competition Appeal Court) and Ms Winnie Byanyima (Executive Director of the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS - UNAIDS - and a Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations).
