Police in the Free State has launched a manhunt after the Winburg Traffic Department's offices were robbed by four gun-wielding assailants.

According to police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, the suspects overpowered security guards and made away with an undisclosed amount of cash. He says the safe was opened with a grinder and cash was robbed.

Thakeng says three security officers were tied up with cable ties and their mouths covered with tape, but one later managed to free himself and then freed the others.

They reported the incident at Winburg Police Station.

"On 14 April 2022, at about 22:30, security officers were on duty guarding the Winburg Traffic Department offices when they were pointed with firearms by four suspects. A case of business robbery was registered for further investigation.

"Anyone who can assist police with information that can lead to the tracing and arrest of the armed robbers is urged to contact Detective Warrant Officer, Lesole Monye, of Winburg Detective Services on 082 466 7678 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111," Thakeng adds.
