The accident-ridden R30 road between Allanridge and Welkom in the Free State has officially been re-opened.

OFM News recently reported on the closure of the road as a result of numerous accidents and deaths that occurred since the beginning of this year, despite warnings.

The spokesperson for Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State, Hillary Mophethe, says the decision to reopen the R30 road comes after consultations with various stakeholders in attempts to address the situation on the much-used stretch of road.

“The road was reopened on Friday, with the agreement that there will be law enforcers - with an arrangement of a stop and go -  so that we keep our road users safe. Up until yesterday, we've not had any issues. We have not had any fatalities or incidences. We just do not know what this rain holds in store for us. We also request the cooperation of road users to please respect the rules of the road and adhere to the warning signs placed on the side of the road, so that they are safe. Their safety is our priority,” adds Mophethe.

The provincial Department of Police, Roads, and Transport had closed this road following many accidents that led to the deaths of 15 people since January. The department previously stated that the R30 has been flooded several times during the recent rainy season and despite repairs done, these fatal accidents persist.

Mophethe said accidents on the R30 road had nothing to do with the conditions of the road. She said that motorists were not complying with the warning signs next to the road.
