Collapsed Kraaipan Bridge in North West affecting thousands─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 15:09 Fri, 01 Apr 2022
The collapsed Kraaipan Bridge came under scrutiny following an oversight visit in the Ratlou Local Municipality in North West by the National Council of Provinces' (NCOP) delegation earlier this week.
According to the North West Provincial Legislature spokesperson, Namhla Luhambe, the NCOP delegation expressed their disappointment at the state of the bridge which collapsed as a result of seasonal rains in the province in January this year. She says the collapsed bridge affects about a thousand households in the area. This has had a major impact on essential services, such as health, school, and shopping.
Luhambe says the MEC for Public Works, Gaoage Molapisi, stated that the department is undergoing an assessment of all bridges in the province following the unexpected collapse of this bridge. This after the Administrator of Public Works, Molete Moremi, committed to ensure that the department provides supports to the Ratlou Municipality, to ensure that the bridge is rebuilt.
NCOP delegates visited various provinces on a week-long programme, aimed at responding to challenges of state capacity in provinces. The NCOP delegates, together with their provincial legislature counterparts, spent the entire week interacting with municipalities on interventions to improve governance challenges and the state of service delivery.
