Mangaung metro to retrieve almost R8 billion owed to them─── 12:46 Mon, 28 Feb 2022
The Mangaung Municipality in Bloemfontein in the Free State has announced the start of their drive to recoup close to R8 billion owed to the metro by defaulting consumers.
According to the municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, the metro is intensifying its credit control and debt collection measures. This includes restrictions on the water supply to defaulting consumers. Khedama says this is part of efforts to improve the city’s financial health and recover the debt owed to the municipality by businesses, government, and residential properties. He adds that most consumers have already received letters of demand; and those who haven’t received letters yet, should be assured that they will receive them before disconnections.
Customers who have been handed over to debt collectors are encouraged to make arrangements for their accounts and subsequently install prepaid water meters, if they haven’t already, says Khedama.
“Non-indigents who have prepaid water meters will have their meters blocked until payment arrangements have been made,” Khedama.
He says the metro is expecting citizens to be fully cooperative as they implement full Credit Control and Debt Collection Procedures.
Khedama says: “We are taking these steps in ensuring that we adhere to our constitutional mandate of collecting and proving basic services to the residents of Mangaung.”
