The Free State Department of Education has responded to a horrific accident that claimed five lives this past Friday.
Departmental spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, tells OFM News that a white Sprinter minibus taxi overturned on the N5 about six kilometres from Bethlehem in the Free State.
The passengers were teachers and School Governing Body members of the Sekoko Primary School in Paul Roux.
He said that they were driving back home from attending a workshop in Tweeling.
He says four people died on the scene, while others died in hospital.
Ndaba conveyed the department’s condolences to the families of the deceased, as well as learners and teachers of the school.
Ndaba further adds that Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe will visit the school and families on Tuesday.
Ndaba adds that seven others sustained serious injuries and were transported to Dihlabeng regional hospital, Phekolong hospital, and Mediclinic Bethlehem.
The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Teachers, parents, and pupils will be offered counseling.
Meanwhile, Ndaba says 20 learners were admitted to hospital for observations in Qwaqwa after a bus they were travelling in, overturned.
