#Floods: Another day, another FS road closed─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 07:26 Sun, 06 Feb 2022
The S44 road between Heilbron and Deneysville in the Free State has been closed temporarily.
The Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport says this is again due to the impact of heavy rainfall in the area of late.
The resulting damage is that some layers of the S44 have been washed away and need to be fixed.
The department’s Hillary Mophethe, says they will keep road users updated on any developments on the road. In the meantime, road users are advised to make use of alternative routes.
Interestingly it appears that before this reported flooding, plans were underway to have the S44 upgraded. A tender between R40 million and R150 million appears to have been listed in September 2021.

On Saturday it was announced that the R711 between Clarens and Fouriesburg in the Free State has officially been closed following the development of a sinkhole owing to flooding. Mophethe says early indications are that the road will be closed for at least 12 months as the department concludes investigations, appoints service providers and repairs this road.
