The 45-year-old driver of the Intercape bus that was trapped in a body of water on the R30 road between Allanridge and Bothaville in the Free State this morning, is now facing a reckless and negligent driving charge.

Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, previously stated that there were road signs warning motorists of flooding in the area when the incident occurred, and despite this, the unnamed driver continued to drive into the dangerous area.

The Intercape bus, carrying 86 women, children and men, was reportedly en route to Pretoria, Gauteng from Umtata in the Eastern Cape when the incident occurred.

No injuries were reported.

This sentiment has also continued on social media with some residents in the area maintaining there were notices and warning signs on the flooding in the area.

Thakeng says a Range Rover is amongst other vehicles that have been swept away by floods reported on this road, owing to motorists’ refusal to take heed of the warning signs.

He pleads with motorists to make use of alternative routes when approaching this portion of the R30 because the danger should not be estimated.

The passenger carrier is yet to issue a statement on the incident.
