R711 road closed for one year owing to sinkhole─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 08:07 Sat, 05 Feb 2022
The R711 between Clarens and Fouriesburg in the Free State has officially been closed following the development of a sinkhole.
The Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport says recent flooding in the area is the reason behind the sinkhole and has also led to the slippage of slopes, making this road unsafe for road users.
The department’s spokesperson Hillary Mophethe says early indications are that the road will be closed for at least 12 months as the department concludes investigations, appoints service providers and repairs this road.
Motorists are urged to make use of alternative roads.
Mophethe has apologised to residents inconvenienced by this closure.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Free State, emergency medical services have rescued 83 Intercape passengers on Saturday morning, after the bus liner got trapped in a body of water on the R30 road between Allanridge and Bothaville. Flash-flooding has been reported on that road since the beginning of 2020.
