The mining operations at the Sibanye Stillwater's Beatrix Mine at Theunissen in the Free State have been suspended.
This has been confirmed by the Head of Investor Relations James Wellsted. He tells OFM News that operations have been suspended whilst investigations into the recent deaths of miners continue. This follows the death of three workers following a fatal accident on Friday. Wellsted says at approximately 10:00, three colleagues at 3 shaft at the Beatrix operations, passed away following a tragic trackless mobile machinery incident.
OFM News previously reported that according to a well-placed source in the upper echelons of the mining industry, the driver of a front loader had a fatal accident on when his loader fell on top of two miners, who died on the scene.

"The board and management of Sibanye-Stillwater extend their sincere condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. Despite improvements in all other safety metrics, Sibanye-Stillwater has experienced a notable regression in fatalities during 2021, with 18 employees losing their lives during the year,” Wellsted adds in a statement. “Any loss of life is unacceptable and all efforts are being focussed on addressing this perplexing increase in fatal safety incidents”.
