EFF calls on FS Premier to fire MEC over #Vrede Dairy Project | News Article

The EFF provincial chairperson in the Free State has called on premier Sisi Ntombela to take action against former Agriculture MEC, Mamiki Qabathe, after the Public Protector report made adverse findings against her.

Mandisa Makesini says the findings are related to the controversial R250 million Vrede Dairy Farm project. Qabathe is among a few officials the alllegedly allowed the massive mismanagement of funds meant to develop upcoming farmers in Vrede.

In 2019, another Free State Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), Roy Jankielsonh, told the State Capture Commission how Qabathe implemented some projects after taking over from the then MEC, Mosebenzi Zwane. Makesini says Ntombela should have dealt with Qabathe a long time ago, following Mkhwebane's report.

Makesini was speaking at a media briefing at the EFF provincial offices in Bloemfontein.

During his testimony, Jankielsohn told the State Capture Commission's Judge Raymond Zondo that the departmentt had committed to pay a total contribution of R342 million over a period of three years in tranches of R114 million per year.

OFM News previously reported that the Provincial Agriculture Department allegedly spent over R220 million on it, yet financial statements show that only R2 million can be accounted for.
