'Infrastructure vandalism in Matjhabeng is rife' - mayor─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:23 Thu, 01 Jul 2021

Service delivery in the areas of Welkom, Allanridge, Hennenman and Odendaalsrus is a cause for concern.
According to the Matjhabeng Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Nkosinjane Speelman, the municipality is doing all it can to ensure adequate service delivery. In an exclusive interview with OFM News, Speelman has confirmed sewage spillage in the areas of Thabong and others, coupled with unsustainable water provision are major challenges plaguing communities. He, however, says this is largely due to vandalism of infrastructure.
Speelman says the municipality has for months called on communities to work with law enforcement agencies to report acts of criminality and vandalism to infrastructure, but not much has come out of it.
“The issue of vandalism in Matjhabeng is very rife. The issue of cable theft in Matjhabeng is rife” he said.
He added the municipality has deployed security officers to guard key infrastructure projects and has written to the provincial and national Cooperative Governance Department to land a helping hand.
Speelman highlighted that despite vandalism to their water and sewerage plant, the municipality is battling with the lack of revenue collection.
He said the Covid-19 pandemic had a negative effect not only on municipal fiscals, but on the residents’ ability to pay for services.
He alludes that unemployment in the area now stands at 37%.
