The auctioning of a fleet, belonging to the financially strained Local Municipality of Kopanong, which includes Trompsburg in the Free State, was put on hold.

This is according to the municipality’s spokesperson, Solly Phama. He says this follows revelations that the executor of the auction did not follow due process.

At least three vehicles belonging to the municipality were set to be auctioned to settle debt owed to the municipal workers’ pension fund which allegedly was not been paid for over years now.

Phama confirms that third party funds may well be running over R50 million but adds that the municipality is engaging with all parties concerned to avert the auctioning of its fleet. The auctioning of the vehicles follows a High Court order against the municipality.

OFM News has sent detailed questions to the municipal union Samwu, and it is yet to reply.

Phama adds that debt to the third parties is actually historical debt and the municipality was dealing with it in accordance.

This municipality is amongst those in the Free State, such as the troubled Mangaung Municipality, which includes Bloemfontein, that owe millions of rands to service providers such as Bloem Water. In 2020 the water board revealed that Kopanong owed them over R300 million.
