New Phokwane mayor elected | News Article

The ANC's Olebogeng Tumodi has been elected as the new mayor of the Phokwane Local Municipality, which includes Hartswater in the Northern Cape.

This, following the dissolution of its council in May 2020.

His election as the new mayor follows the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) by-elections a few weeks ago where the party reigned supreme in that area.

Tumodi has been elected alongside Remaketse Portia Selogilwe as the new Speaker, and Motlagosebatho Mohale as the Chief Whip of the municipal council.

Premier Zamani Saul dissolved the council following allegations of financial mismanagement and lack of political leadership at the municipality for the past four years.

Saul previously said that some of these challenges at this municipality also included the resignation of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2017 and failure to approve the 2019/20 Budget within the specified timeframes of the Municipal Financial Management Act (MFMA), amongst others.

He further added that this sequence of events have unfortunately been unfolding at the expense of the people, robbing communities of basic service delivery.
