#CoronavirusFS: Effects ripple through SAPS─── LUCKY NKUYANE 17:31 Mon, 27 Jul 2020
The Goedemoed and Tseseng police stations outside Bloemfontein are two of the latest government entities to be affected by the Coronavirus.
The two stations confirmed positive Covid-19 cases on Monday, with police spokesperson, Motanti Makhele, saying Goedmoed has been temporarily closed and will operate from the main entrance into Goedemoed Correctional Service facility. Makhele adds the station in Tseseng will operate from the local municipal offices next to the police station.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba, tells OFM News over 10 000 police officers have tested positive for the virus, of which 102 have died and 235 have been hospitalised.
Last week, Police Minister Bheki Cele announced that the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal had the most recorded officers infected with the virus.
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) recently claimed that many of its members feared for their lives because station commanders were flouting Covid-19 health regulations.
Popcru spokesperson, Richard Mamabola, said the situation could have been avoided. He said if there is no immediate action taken by police management, the SAPS is likely to lose more members.
* Meanwhile, Makhele says Goedemoed residents can contact their The Station Commander at 082 466 7256 or the Detective Commander at 071 671 8318.
While Tseseng residents can contact their Station Commander at 082 455 6107 or the Detective Commander at 082 419 7084.
"The buildings will be decontaminated for the duration of the closure and members will be subjected to necessary Covid-19 related protocols and communities will be informed once they are operational again. The Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, Lt Gen Baile Motswenye and management wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused by these closures," Makhele adds.
