The DA in the North West has written to Brits Police Station Commander requesting him to intervene and prevent the alleged taxi violence by taxi operators in that area.

The local DA Councillor, Jan van Rhyn, says the drivers are illegally barricading roads, intimidating and using violence against other road users including truck drivers.

He says other road users are intimidated and threatened into also participating and their trucks are used to block roads. Van Rhyn adds that the community of Madibeng has a right to freedom of movement and to be protected from criminal elements who have taken Madibeng hostage for their own gain.

The police are yet to comment.

“The DA is concerned with SAPS’ failure and inaction to address this ongoing problem, but the police have a duty to protect residents and stakeholders who are utilising these roads.

“These roadblocks have a negative effect on the local economy of Madibeng as trucks transporting goods cannot operate fully, businesses are also forced to close down and no trade can take place,” said Van Rhyn.

“The DA calls on SAPS to proactively gather information and to establish plans to swiftly respond to the lawlessness that has been in operation.

“The DA will through its members in the Legislature request Premier Job Mokgoro to assist the SAPS in the province to deploy additional law enforcement officers to all hot spots where taxi violence is a threat to communities,” he adds.
