The Odeion String Quartet invites audiences to an evening of striking musical contrasts at their upcoming concert, “Strings in Contrast”, on 13 March 2025 at 19:00 at the Odeion, University of the Free State.

The Odeion String Quartet was established at the University of the Free State (UFS) in 1991 as a permanent full-time, resident string quartet. At present, it is the only resident string quartet at a South African university. The Odeion String Quartet is a flagship of the UFS and symbolises the university’s commitment to the arts. It plays an important strategic role in the development of symphony orchestra music and in classical music training in the Free State.

In conversation with Yolanda Maartens, Chris van Zyl and Samantha Durrant from the Odeion String Quartet highlight the anniversaries of two composers whose music will be featured in their concert. 

With it being 100 years since the birth of Maurice Ravel, his luminous and impressionistic String Quartet in F Major will be celebrated. In addition to this, Dmitri Shostakovich’s dramatic and thought-provoking String Quartet No. 3 in F Major, Op. 73. will also be celebrated as he gets recognition 150 years after his death.

This captivating programme explores the interplay of light and shadow, delicacy and intensity, by bringing to life these two masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire.
