‘Sojourn’: An exhibition of contemporary art curated from ArtbankSA | News Article
You are invited to join Oliewenhuis Art Museum for the opening of ‘Sojourn’.

Yolanda de Kock from the Oliewenhuis Art Museum was part of the curatorial team, she joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat.

Oliewenhuis Art Museum is pleased to announce the opening of Sojourn, a compelling exhibition and exploration of transience and transformation in contemporary South African art.

Curated from the Art Bank of South Africa Collection, this exhibition interrogates the concept of temporary stays and their profound impact on human experience.

Sojourn explores the balance between transience and permanence, challenging ideas of time, place, and identity. The curated collection reflects the concept of sojourning through diverse artistic expressions.

Vanessa Tembane’s digital collages blend South African imagery with Mozambican elements, using traditional fabrics to evoke hybridised memories of cultural identity and diaspora.

Audrey Anderson’s cityscapes, featuring floating figures, symbolise displacement and observation, aligning with themes of temporary dwelling.

Works by Lebo Thoka, Ilené Bothma, and Dimakatso Mathopa focus on female identity, self-reflection, and the effects of patriarchal norms.

Azrael Langa’s Mobile Home highlights impermanence through acrylic and smoke, depicting a fragile reality of transience.

The ArtbankSA curators state: “Sojourn fosters dialogue on impermanence, encouraging a reconsideration of our relationships with place, time, and cultural identity.”

You are invited to join Oliewenhuis Art Museum for the opening of Sojourn. The opening is at 18:00 on Thursday, 10 October 2024, in the Main Building at Oliewenhuis Art Museum.

Everyone is welcome and entrance is free of charge. Refreshments will be served.
