Northern Cape production receives Standard Bank Ovation Award─── 09:00 Thu, 17 Aug 2023
At this year’s National Arts Festival, a production from Kimberley in the Northern Cape put the spotlight on societal changes and the LGBTQI+ community through beautiful music and dance, which earned them a Standard Bank Ovation Award.
Producer of “Legendary Queer Sisters”, Emmanuel “E’mma” Rattle, joins Mid-Morning Magic’s Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about this incredible award and the production’s plans for the future.
Legendary Queer Sisters takes the audience through the journey of ruffled feathers and Bandile’s reconciliation as legendaries. It is a theatre performance piece that celebrates both the genial and scars of the LGBTQI+ community through song, dance, and narrative. The piece shows the psychological impact our community has on the upbringing of those who coexist within it. In the piece, parenting styles are questioned, as are incidents of murder and rape.
Emmanuel has been the operations manager for K-STER Magazines, a local magazine in Kimberley, and the co-founder of Kamvelihle Performing Arts in the Northern Cape. He has also worked as an operations manager for Masasa Communications.
Emma is currently also working as a freelance performing artist and strives to create employment for freelance performing artists. Emma is also working as a freelance creative director for Wall of Arts. Emmanuel has been appointed as a promoter’s project manager and choreographer in the Northern Cape for a national campaign for ABSA. È’mma is the producer of Legendary Queer Sisters.
