Former Gauteng police commissioner to appear for drunk driving─── 05:22 Tue, 26 Nov 2013
Pietermaritzburg - The trial of Lt-Gen Bethuel Mondli Zuma on charges including driving under the influence is expected to continue in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
In October, road traffic supervisor Zain Mahomed told the court that Zuma stayed in a bathroom for a long time to avoid being breathalysed on the night he was arrested, in Pietermaritzburg in December 2008.
An initial test indicated that Zuma's blood alcohol level was 3.5 times over the legal limit. The test was however not valid in court.
Mahomed said he was called out by traffic officers after midnight in December 2008. Zuma had allegedly ignored instructions to stop, and they had found him at a house.
National police commissioner Riah Phiyega announced on August 31 this year that Zuma had been appointed Gauteng's new police commissioner, replacing Mzwandile Petros. Hours later he was removed from the post after it emerged that the case against him was still pending.
He has pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to stop when ordered to, driving under the influence, attempting to escape from custody, and defeating the ends of justice.
